Temiya cave preservation building

Discovery and preservation of Temiya cave (shoes)

Temiya cave (shoes) was discovered in Sagami (we look at Saga) country (current Kanagawa) Odawara in 1866 (Keio 2) by long soldier of the Imperial Guard of mason who came for construction of herring watch box of Asari district. Tufa (gyokaigan) called Otaru soft stone was exposed, and long soldier of the Imperial Guard was in the middle of being looking for stone for building, and around Temiya cave discovered that various patterns were ticked away in rock face in accidental cave.

As for this sculpture, scientific observation and report were accomplished only after depending on John Milne (J.Milne British: earthquake, geologist). In addition, investigation was carried out by Bureau of Development (current Hokkaido Prefectural Government), Sozaburo Watase in sequence.
In 1921 (Taisho 10), the value was accepted and became country designated historic spot and maintained carving after the original and preservation cover shop with bronze in 1949 (Showa 24). However, we started preservation restoration business from 1986 that 120 years or more stood since discovery and prevented weathering, progress of exfoliation, and to convey Temiya cave which was valuable cultural assets in history and needed time for approximately ten years and completed "Temiya Cavern Preservation Center" which saved Temiya cave incised character side in 1995.

Temiya cave and the time

Person with corner

There was opinion various once what it expressed when sculpture (incised character (inkoku) image) drawn on Temiya cave was carved with by whom. However, we came to understand something by various research carried out to date.
In the times when this sculpture was carved with, we will hit by excavation now in early days from the end in the Yayoi (good) times of Honshu to Burial Mound age in middle part ... in the latter half times in the times in Jomon (zokujomon) of approximately 1,600 years ago sequel to. Recent Hokkaido assumed rich nature background, and, at time of hunting collection culture that developed Jomon culture more, the culture amounted to Sakhalin from Niigata.

There is sculpture carved with in the same times into fugoppe cave of Yoichi-cho. As for the sculpture of fugoppe cave, it is thought that ship, fish, person were drawn, but there is thing resembling thing of Temiya cave closely very much.

After having carved, as for the sculpture of Temiya cave, it is estimated that we polish and finished by stone axes. By excavation, part of blade excavates damaged stone ax with rock and earthenware vessel of Jomon period sequel to which ticked away sculpture.

Sculpture of Temiya cave

In the country, sculpture such as Temiya cave is discovered only in fugoppe cave currently. Therefore there was various interpretation over this sculpture. We regarded this as "letter", and even person whom we decoded appeared once.

However, since discovery of fugoppe cave, it turned out that it was ancient sculpture similar to rock face image seen around the Amur (river flowing through the Siberia east side). Image of almost similar ship is drawn on rock picture and fugoppe cave of sakachi Alian remains of Siberia, and there is thing which resembled "person with corner" in Temiya cave. Such rock face image is seen in Russia, China, the Korean Peninsula around the Sea of Japan, and it is thought that Temiya cave expresses flow of big culture around such Sea of Japan.

Person who touched thing such as person with something like stick and square mask in hand is described other than "person with corner" in Temiya cave. In addition, four pairs of animals with corner are drawn, too.

Opinion whether person having such corner is the northeast whole area such as Siberia of Asia, and did not express shaman (person who does intense dance and prayer, and does divine message of fortune-telling and crop) seen widely once is influential.

Temiya Cavern Preservation Center is remain valuable at all indicating people of continuing Jomon culture that lived in Hokkaido in this way in about 4-5 centuries having interchanged with people of northeast Asia where they put the Sea of Japan. It may be said that it is primary remain in knowing heart of the ancients.

In Temiya Cavern Preservation Center, we can actually see sculpture (incised character image) stored with capsule. In addition, we can know state of life of continuing Jomon culture that is the times of cave fresco of all parts of the world and Temiya cave.
