 Important cultural property former Nippon Yusen K.K. Otaru Branch starts construction in 1904 and is stone construction 2 stories architecture of early modern times Europe revival style completed in October, 39. As for the designer, *ritsushichijiro, construction won local carpenter leader Iwayoshi, Yamaguchi, and the cost of construction was approximately 60,000 yen with amount of money at the time. In addition, first-class architects left representative work in the highest technique at the time from the Meiji latter half. This building is symbolic existence of the days of creation.
City obtained by transfer from Nippon Yusen in 1955 and had been reused as Otaru-shi museum from 31 years, the following day, but, in March, 44, was appointed to important cultural property of country as representative stone building which was in the latter half of the Meiji era.
However, because deterioration was outstanding year by year, we started construction of restoration construction in October, 59 and were completed in June, 62 after 33-month term of works. Commercial building which was in the latter half of the Meiji era which represented merchant town Otaru here revived as superior cultural heritage.

 Building arranges the wide entrance for distinguished guest for symmetry, room to the north around central station and takes lateral square-U-shape plane projecting into back both fields. There are Kingo Tatsuno (Bank of Japan Otaru Branch, Tokyo Station), Tokuma Katayama (guesthouse), three people of hi*tatsuzo (Mitsui Bank Otaru Branch) in the same period. After the graduation, it becomes building advisor of Nippon Yusen via ministry of official in charge of building, Department of the Navy, Ministry of Communications from about 1897. Existing work includes nichihonsuijunharatenhyoko (Tokyo constitutional government memory garden).


Guidance of document display corner

Marine transportation document corner: Under the theme of "step and Nippon Yusen of Otaru," we display development progress of Otaru mainly on marine transportation of Meiji, the Taisho era period and document about Nippon Yusen.

Demarcation meeting reference library: Other than border monument (model), border monument rubbed copy, we display photograph and document about work in delimitation meeting and the field.
Restoration reference library: We display valuable document provided in the plaster detachment situation, restoration construction including artificial stone making process.


Opening time: From 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (until Saturday, November 3, 2018)

Closed day: Tuesday (in the case of holiday, we change on the opening, nearest weekdays after the next day) and the year-end and New Year holidays (from December 29 to January 3)

Admission charges: Free of charge lower than one 150 yen, junior high student living in general 300 yen, high school student, the city 70 years or older

※Use of group (more than 20 people) is 20% discount

※Person having certificate of the physically disabled, nursing notebook or mental patient health welfare notebook and caregiver are free
